Human Centered Design Basics, Tactics, Advantages - Algrim.co

Human Centered Design Basics, Tactics, Advantages - Algrim.co Of the many terminologies, we have now to describe various disciplines of design (product design, communication design, visual design, UX design, et. al) human-centered design is the one that resonates with me personally the most. Because in my opinion, it holds the truest form of product development in mind. Though, it is one of the harder to describe disciplines. For business leaders who may be reading this article, it's important to recognize that embracing human-centered design can truly only be done from an executive level. And then it has to find its way to your design department, then your product and marketing departments. This is unfortunately not an ethos or discipline that will be easy to deploy. Let's start with what human-centered design is. The human-centered design definition is as follows: Human-centered design builds upon participatory action research by moving beyond participant’s involvement and producing solutions to problems rather than solely documenting them. Initial stages usually revolve around immersion, observing, and contextual framing in which innovators immerse themselves with the problem and community. Consequent stages may then focus on community brainstorming, modeling and prototyping, and implementation in community spaces. Further, the human-centered design typically focuses on integrating technology or other useful tools in order to alleviate problems, especially around issues of health. Once the solution is integrated, the human-centered design usually employs system usability scales and community feedback in order to determine the success of the solution. As you can see this discipline has a social awareness to it. Almost an activist awareness to it. But why do I love it so much for digital design as well? Because of the scenarios of the people behind the machines. This discipline really embodies the thought process behind calculating the position of the end user beyond calling them a ‘user’. The term human-centered design has really been embodied at IDEO, one of the worlds best design agencies. They’ve been very proactive in their philanthropic efforts to include this discipline as part of their core statement. Those are some of the basics behind human-centered design. Which should give you a foundation for the following parts of this article. If you’d like to understand the history behind the human-centered design practice, there are some wonderful human-centered design books made by IDEO, which can be found here. Advantages to this discipline From a leadership perspective, making this type of discipline part of your core mission has a few advantages. Firstly, if done correctly, it encourages research in the intangible natures that can provide an edge. Currently, your product and engineering teams may do some type of research before they proceed forward. But its often in the settings of, what problems do our customers have and how can we address those. While that’s wonderful and absolutely correct, it doesn’t go into the persona levels of understanding when relating to the customer. For instance, what geographic environments are they in? What social pressures do they have? Are they attempting to resolve a dispute that they are having? What are the triggers that go above and beyond an interface level piece of friction? These questions can give you a huge advantage. Ultimately because they will be very difficult to answer and most likely will lead the teams into studies and research papers that are related to the category of business they’re in but also go beyond their everyday scope of discussion. To me, that’s a powerful tool. A market understanding deeper than the competitors so that work can be benchmarked against that. Your efforts to make this part of an inclusive effort shows that the additional time spent on deeper research is okay and encouraged. Thus, why it has to be started from an executive level and not from an individual contributor level. The other advantages that this discipline holds is the ability to market those empathetic endeavors. This should be part of the core marketing messaging then. The absolute understanding of not just the core customer, but the scenario and emotional presence of that customer. What pressures they’re under, for example. This should help provide a great springboard for competitive marketing communication that your competitors may not be doing. The ability to relate on a much deeper level. Of course, all of these efforts endure larger costs. Time, especially with larger teams, is the commodity you want to control. And you have to be sure you are in the position to be placing this investment of time. The difference of the discipline When comparing the disciplines in design, I think the reason I more closely related to this discipline is that it holds problem-solving as part of its core. When we discuss visual design, it becomes more difficult to say this is about problem-solving and others may interpret it more closely to a branding mechanism. Let’s look at the two descriptions of human-centered design and UX design right next to each other: Human-centered design (HCD) is a design and management framework that develops solutions to problems by involving the human perspective in all steps of the problem-solving process. Human involvement typically takes place in observing the problem within context, brainstorming, conceptualizing, developing, and implementing the solution. User experience design (UX design) is the process of enhancing user satisfaction with a product by improving the usability, accessibility, and pleasure provided in the interaction with the product. User experience design encompasses traditional humanâ€"computer interaction (HCI) design, and extends it by addressing all aspects of a product or service as perceived by users. Tactics to embrace Embracing human-centered design can be simple. You don’t have to dramatically alter your organizational structure or company ethos in order to embrace it. Here are some really simple tactics for getting it started. Start with personas. Ask each one of your product teams to define the customer, from a meaningful level. Try to avoid the simple answers, like where they work and what they do. Ask the questions of, what car do they drive? What’s their 5-year plan? What social pressures do they experience at work? Consider the philanthropic components. If you are in the space where there is the social or humanitarian impact on your product or design work, consider the effects of that. Ask for plans both positive and negative with regard to the potential effects of a product release, when substantial enough. This is particularly important for those in physical goods companies, who may be creating real-world long-term waste that has a geopolitical impact. Consider emotional responses. Define the emotional component you are answering in your product and marketing matrix. Ask for plans on which emotional trigger we are speaking to, how we are doing it and what the potential effects of it may be. This is much easier for those who are solving housing problems or something along those lines. But I’d argue that anything we produce, should have a potential emotional trigger we’re either responding to or acknowledging. Conclusion As we started with this article, you can see how this goes above and beyond a designer individual contributions. This cannot be a process which we ask our contributors to do. We must enable this process from a leadership level, provide the flexibility to ask questions which will take time to draw conclusions from and utilize the conclusions that the organization spent time in gathering. I’d like to think that the best form of design always come from a leadership level. In particular, the success I’ve seen is when it does. When that freedom to truly connect with each customer is enabled.

Get that feedback!

Get that feedback! Its always really tough when you find out that you didn’t get the job. And not many of us will  be lucky enough to be offered every job for which we apply.  Its very important  if you dont get  the offer you hoped for,  that you avoid the temptation to crawl under the nearest stone! There are important things  to be learnt from the experience. Face up to what has happened and do your best to learn from it. This gives you the optimum chance of a different outcome next time. You might like to read our earlier post on the subject too. What if you got rejected right at the start of the process? If this was after application form, then your chances of getting any feedback from the prospective employer are very slight indeed. This leaves you with limited options. Option 1: Plough on with the next application to a similar employer. The closing date may be approaching and you don’t want to miss out. You can probably save time by recycling a lot of the application form. Stop! The last application was rejected and you may not be able to reapply to that organisation. Your list of preferred employers might be relatively short, don’t risk sending off an application to another. You need to understand as fully as you can what went wrong last time. Option 2: Ask your friends or family for some thoughts on your unsuccessful application. This probably isn’t a great idea either. Theyre likely to want to be affirmative and may sympathise with you, scandalised that you were rejected. They might make you feel better but this isnt very likely to move your job hunt forwards. Option 3: You could ask the opinion of one of your careers consultants. No prizes for identifying that I think this is a better idea. Your careers consultant will be familiar with what is being looked for in your chosen occupational area and should be able to give you some informed thoughts about your previous application. Sometimes the feedback will be that the application looks great and that there is no obvious reason why you did not advance. Often you will be able to get some real insight into what might have gone wrong. In the latter case you can “fix” things before you make another application. What if you made it to first interview but no further? If you got rejected after a telephone or video interview, or even after a first face to face interview, it is often difficult to get any meaningful feedback. This can be annoying. In order to get to this stage you have had to invest heavily in working for the interview. Some employers will not give you any feedback, others simply tell you that there were other better candidates. On one particularly memorable occasion when I asked for feedback and enquired what I could have done differently I was told: “Well, you could have killed the other candidate.” I was left speechless and certainly don’t advocate that as an acceptable approach! If you can’t get any feedback then try to be as honest as you can with yourself. Did you stammer and stutter? Were there questions you couldn’t answer? Were you so nervous that you couldn’t be yourself? If you can identify your weaknesses you can try to do something about them for next time. The practice of this interview and your honest reflection on it should improve your performance for the next one. And if you made it to end stage? By this time most employers will give you honest and full feedback. Be prepared to ask for it and listen to it! You might be feeling heartbroken that your dream hasnt worked out, but you will probably have other interviews ahead of you and you need to take every step to maximise your chances of succeeding next time. So what questions could you ask to prompt effective feedback? Here are some thoughts: Could you tell me how I could have improved my performance? Were there any aspects of the interview where I performed particularly well or badly? Could you be more precise about exactly what you were looking for? What more could I have done to demonstrate my suitability for the role? Would you welcome an application from me in the future? The last question is really important if this really was your dream job. The employer owes you an honest answer and you should rely on what is said. If a reapplication is encouraged think how this may fit into your current and future plans. If the answer is not to bother applying again then move on. Your future might be different from the one you had envisaged, this does not mean that it will be diminished. In a few years’ time you might be really pleased with the way things worked out.

Economy of You An Interview with Kimberly Palmer - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

Economy of You An Interview with Kimberly Palmer - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Recently, I spoke with Kimberly Palmer, senior money editor and Alpha Consumer blogger at  U.S. News World Report. Kimberly is also a successful side-hustler, building an Etsy shop of money planners to help create some financial freedom. She also is releasing a new book, entitled  The Economy of You: Discover Your Inner Entrepreneur and Recession-Proof Your Life  (January 2014, AMACOM), which focuses on how to build a successful side-business to create financial security and personal satisfaction. We discussed her journey, the importance of having a side-gig, and how you can maintain a day job while pursuing your passion.   How would you define your personal brand? I love helping people feel more empowered in their financial lives â€" that’s how I think of my personal brand. I’ve always loved talking with my friends and younger sisters about career decisions and money management, and now I get to do something similar in my day job (personal finance writing), side-gig (designing Etsy money planners), and now my new book! It all comes back to financial empowerment. I want people to feel good about their money â€" how they earn it and how they manage it. How were you able to build a successful side business while not sacrificing your day job? I squeeze my side-business (my Etsy shop) into slivers of time between other activities. I get a lot done during my kids’ nap time on the weekends, and I send Tweets or browse around Etsy and relevant blogs at night after I get them to bed and clean up. During the day if I’m out during lunch, then I can use my smartphone to update Etsy listings or even just day dream about new product ideas. Most of the real work I do, on product creation, happens during larger chunks of time on the weekend â€" naptime is key. I have to admit though, now that I have two children, it’s a lot harder than with one. I plan to take more vacation days from my full-time when I really want to be productive. What are the benefits to a side job other than extra income? One of the most obvious benefits is the added financial security. What really drove me at first was the knowledge that I work in a field â€" as almost all of us do â€" where jobs can disappear overnight. There’s just no such thing as job security anymore, and that’s certainly the case in my field, journalism. The chance of my still holding my current job when I turn 65 is probably similar to the chance of me winning American Idol. So we all need a back-up plan, a way to earn money if our primary jobs suddenly disappear. But an even greater benefit, and one I discovered after I launched my Etsy shop, is the deep sense of satisfaction that comes from running a business. You are creating things and people are buying them. That is an incredibly validating feeling. If I’m ever having a bad day, I just scroll down my Etsy feedback page and it’s a better boost than a three-shot latte. (Although those always help, too.) How do you see the traditional career changing in the next few years? Entrepreneurship will become increasingly important, even for those of us who hold so-called traditional jobs. Companies want to hire people with entrepreneurial skills â€" people who take initiative, think about the value they are building in the marketplace, and who have new ideas that they can pursue from start to finish. We will see people increasingly creating hybrid careers, where they pursue traditional jobs working inside companies and for other people while simultaneously building up their own ventures and side-businesses. They will seamlessly move between the two as their personal and working lives shift over time. It’s an exciting development and one that opens up a lot of creative possibilities.  What are a few key pieces of advice you would give to others who are looking to build a successful career? First off, you have to think of yourself as a mini-empire even if you aren’t technically an entrepreneur yet. We’re all entrepreneurs, even if we don’t know it. That means defining and growing your value, thinking about how you can help people in a way that also provides a living for yourself, and literally building your own business, too, even if it’s small and on the side. Second, you want to find people who are doing what you want to be doing, but who are a few steps ahead of you. You can stalk these people online, via social media and their blogs and newsletters. They will inspire you. When you notice yourself feeling envious, embrace that feeling, because it’s just showing you where you want to be â€" and you can get there. Third, embrace failure. Every single side-hustler I interviewed in my book failed at some point. They eventually succeeded, because they kept going. As my dad always says, if you’re not failing, it just means you’re not trying hard enough. Developing some coping strategies during the down times to keep you going is essential. For me, it usually comes down to taking a mental break with my kids, who usually put things in perspective pretty quickly for me. Thank you to Kimberly for taking the time to speak with me. If you want to know more about building up a side-gig, purchase her new book, visit her website, and check out her Etsy shop (That last plug is just because I like her!).

Custom Resume Writing - The Link Between Custom Resume Writing YouTube and Google AdSense

Custom Resume Writing - The Link Between Custom Resume Writing YouTube and Google AdSenseYou may be asking yourself, what's the big deal about YouTube and custom resume writing, and what is this thing that everyone is talking about? I am here to tell you that there is a huge connection between these two.People are always looking for a way to make money. Some of them are going to YouTube. You see, all kinds of people have to make money on the internet. If you are a writer, you are probably used to creating good old fashioned 'muckraking' type articles to help people out. If you can write an article, you know how much it will cost to get your article out there. For most people that doesn't happen because they don't have the time or they just don't have the right skills. This is where YouTube comes in. There are millions of people who are watching videos on YouTube everyday. You can just place a video up and if your video is interesting enough, your subscribers will subscribe to your chan nel. So you can easily make money using YouTube. This is how custom resume writing works. You can create a custom resume, find an interesting video out there on YouTube, and then you can use that video as a source of information for your subscribers. You can have people make comments on the resume to tell you more about the person in the video, and they will let you know how much they want your resume. Now you need to make sure that you are following the rules, so make sure you don't get yourself into any legal trouble, but you should be able to do it on a general basis with search engine optimization. I know some people have used this technique to make thousands of dollars each month doing custom resume writing. But the most important thing to do, is make sure that you are actually making money on the internet, by promoting other people's websites, or getting traffic from places like job board sites. It really is a simple formula.People will continue to use the old style journal for p ersonal letters and it will be something that we will keep doing for many years to come. It will take a lot of time and effort, but it will pay off in the end.

Top 3 Reasons People Dont Use Social Media for their Job Search - CareerEnlightenment.com

The point of your social media efforts is to get a job.So do as much as you need to accomplish that goal.Write your plan and follow it, then there is no danger of spending more time than you are comfortable with spending on a computer.Remember the main point of all of this is to take your online relationships and bring them off line.Im Overwhelmed and Dont Know Where to StartIf you had a club sandwich in front of you, with 10 layers of BLT goodness, would you try to wrap your mouth around the whole thing?Of course not.Similarly, with anything new, begin somewhere and in small bits. I teach a 5-step process, and each of those steps is broken down into even smaller bits.No one expects you to be an expert on this stuff overnight.Remember, you need to do only as much as you need to in order to get the job done.I play drums. My drum teacher Paul Mason used to say, There is nothing you cant do, as long as you break it up into small and manageable parts. Our lesson would start off with his d emonstrating what he wanted me to do, usually some crazy display of rhythm and limb-independence. I would groan. Id say, Thats too hard.So we broke down each limb, each part, then begin to combine them one by one. Slowly I got two limbs working together, then three. Finally, by the end of the week, I could play for him what I had thought was impossible. In this way my confidence as a drummer was developed.Take a part of social media, like your LinkedIn profile, and spend a day mastering it. Then move on to Groups, spend a day, master it. And so forth. The biggest resistance is resistance itself. Dont accept any excuses. If you want a job, the choice is clear. Use social media.Comments? Six Tips for Following Up After the Interview

Six Tips for Following Up After the Interview The time in between an interview and decisions for the next round of interviews can feel like an eternity when you are anxious to move your job search forward. What can you do in conjunction with the interview process to follow up strategically and intelligently? This infographic offers some suggestions. Six Tips for Following Up After the Interview The time in between an interview and decisions for the next round of interviews can feel like an eternity when you are anxious to move your job search forward.  But what can you do in conjunction with the interview process to follow up strategically and intelligently? Here are a few suggestions.1. During the interview, ask when the hiring manager plans to conduct the next round of interviews or make the job offer. If you ask this question during the interview, you are more likely to have some sort of benchmark to go by for follow-up, and the waiting game becomes more manageable. If you are told that the company plans to get back to all applicants in one week, then it would certainly be acceptable to call on day eight if you havent heard from the company, and remind them that they mentioned giving candidates a status update in one week and you are just checking in.2. Send a thank you letter.A thank you letter is more than just a courtesy. Its an opportunity to remind the hiring manager of the value you can bring to the organization. Some candidates dont bother sending a thank you letter; doing so can be another way to differentiate you.3. Ask if you can stay in touch with the hiring manager during the interview period.Sometimes a companys plans for filling a position can be extended, particularly if it is a large company or if you are  interviewing  at a company where there isnt a live  job opening. In these cases, it is important to remain top-of-mind with the hiring authority. You can say, I know you wont be making a decision for some time, but would I would like to stay in touch. Or, Can I send you a LinkedIn invitation? That way we can stay in touch during this interim period.4. Continue to research company openings and movement. If the position was posted on the company website or a job board, continue to monitor the posting to see if it was closed or removed. Priorities in companies can change quickly and by monitoring the status of the posting, you may gain clues as to what is happening internally in the organization.5. Stay in touch with company contacts. If you got the interview through a  networking  lead, stay connected with that person to see whether they have any knowledge of whats going on in the organization. Perhaps the hiring manager has decided to add additional positions or upgrade the job you applied for.6. Be patient.Wed like to think that we are the first thing on the hiring managers mind, but usually we arent. Interviewing is generally just one small part of the hiring managers responsibility and sometimes unfortunately, it takes a back seat to other pressing issues. If after all the waiting, it turns out that you are not the person selected for the position, dont abandon the relationship you worked so hard to create; just reinvent it. Find opportunities to stay in touch with the hiring manager. Many companies like to keep in touch with their No. 2 choice for the position because there might be a better fit for that per son somewhere down the line. Every hiring manager you meet can turn into a networking contact and a possible resource for the future.
